Growth in Cosmetic Dentistry as Brits Demand Straighter Teeth

Whilst the UK may be stereotypically seen as the land of people with bad teeth by Americans, according to a recent survey carried out by RealSelf, the demand for cosmetic dentistry is set to outstrip the USA.

In recent years, increasing numbers of adults have sought to improve the appearance of their teeth and there has been a continued growth in the popularity of teeth straightening treatments. RealSelf conducted a survey of more than 1,000 UK residents over the age of 18 to discover trends in the demand for cosmetic dentistry.

The survey found that:

  • 76% of adults wanted to change something about their face or body compared with 80% in the USA. However, more people here are considering taking action.
  • The most desired improvements people want to make is cosmetic dentistry. 43% of the people that took part in the survey wanted to improve their teeth with dental treatments such as whitening or veneers, or orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign.
  • The biggest demand for cosmetic dentistry treatment was in 18-34 year-olds.

Why the increased demand?
The main reason for adults seeking cosmetic treatment, including cosmetic dentistry, were to improve their self-esteem. According to research, 43% of UK respondents to the poll said that their reason for turning to cosmetic treatment was to improve their self-esteem and self-confidence. Other common reasons for cosmetic procedures were milestone events such as birthdays, weddings, starting a new job or entering into a new relationship.

In the past, teeth straightening treatments were viewed to have been for children and teenagers. For many adults, the idea of noticeable orthodontic devices made them feel uncomfortable, so they avoided improving their teeth as braces would make them feel self-conscious. However, with the advancements in orthodontics in recent years, there are a number of different discreet teeth straightening treatments available to adults:

  • Clear and ceramic braces – like conventional metal braces but they use clear or tooth coloured brackets, making them much less visible.
  • Lingual braces – probably the most discreet teeth straightening solution. Like metal braces, Lingual braces use brackets and wires, however, they are fitted to the back of the teeth, making them practically invisible.
  • Invisalign – Invisalign uses removable clear aligners to move the teeth into their intended position. They are practically undetectable as they are made from wafer thin, medical grade transparent plastic.

With so many effective discreet teeth straightening treatments available to adults, it is unsurprising that demand for cosmetic dentistry has increased considerably in recent years. Whilst traditional braces can leave people feeling self-conscious and less confident in their appearance, discreet braces allow them to improve their teeth without the fear of attention being drawn to their mouth.
